I found your blog while doing some research on Ukraine. I spent ten days there as a tourist at the end of September. (As I read the rest of your blog I see how much you hate tourists!)

Anyhow, I hope you are able to do the Chernobyl trip. When we there they quoted a price of nearly $300 per person... so instead we went to the museum in Kiev.

Hi Tiago,

Good piece. I have lived in Rio and visited places like Rocinha. I have thought about starting a housing NGO in the city. Being Irish I have thought about using the model of this organisation - http://www.irishtownship.com/htm/about.htm - which works in Capetown which is a very similar city, in many ways.

Could you have a quick look at their site? I would value your opinion as someone who has been close ot the ground and given these issues a considerable amount of thought.

Also, what do you think about groups such as Afro Reggae. I visited one of their centres in Vidigal Geral, but I still debating about the effectiveness of their approach.

I too lived in Rio for two years and have lived in Medellin for 2 years. Explaining the difference between the favelas of Rio and the comunas of MDE has always been difficult to put into words. I think your summation: "people don’t need something to believe in despite having trouble putting food on the table; they need something to believe in because they have trouble putting food on the table." does it very effectively.

No one visiting Rio will ever grasp the total despair and hopelessness of the people living in a favela just as a short visit to a communa in Medellin will never explain these Colomnbianas hope and purpose in life.

Nice photos and you should put another "longer" visit to Medellin on your itinerary.
