I was recently shown this fascinating map of Rio indicating which favelas are controlled by which criminal factions.
The blue are the communities controlled by militias, who charge residents a "tax" to keep the "peace" and keep out "drug addicts." The red are the Red Command, a well-known drug trafficking group. Yellow is Amigos dos Amigos (Friends of Friends), which is the drug trafficking group that controls Rocinha, where I live. The purple is the Terceiro Comando Puro (Third Pure Command), yet another drug trafficking group. Flames are sites of ongoing conflicts between criminal factions.

I've already written this on Mateo's blog, and I hate to be redundant, but it's pretty incredible how tame other cities in South America are now (Santiago, for example) compared to Rio. Would you say it casts a shadow over everyday life? Or is it just one of those unspoken things, and everyone just sort of goes about their business?
To answer your question, I think you're right in that it definitely depends on your mood. Usually I'd say I like a smaller party, but this fiesta in particular was amazing just in sheer size, almost overwhelming. So far, Santiago's nightlife has really impressed me-- it has something for everyone.
Take care, keep writing, and make sure Mateo doesn't kill himself, alright?
It's great to see a photo of you with the girls on this blog. Isn't Milena a doll? Good for you for volunteering with I2I.
